The political controversy over “The Day After” when it was first broadcast in 1983 had to do with the idea that a television movie about a nuclear war was an indictment of the policies of the Reagan Administration. Of course “The Day After” was not an attack on a particular president, but rather it represented the liberal nightmare of the worst of all possible futures, with a full out nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. Four years later the ultimate conservative nightmare was aired with the mini-series “Amerika,” in which the United States has been taken over by the Communists. Both were predicated on questionable assumptions, the former on an escalation of a conflict over Berlin and the later on the effects of an electro-magnetic pulse, but those were both simply excuses to tell the story that wanted to be told.

Ultimately “The Day After” is not so much a story as it is a depiction of what a nuclear war would be like that comes under the heading of “seeing is believing.” Prior to the airing of this television film Hollywood showed what it was like to live in the world after a nuclear war in films from “On the Beach” to “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” suggested that a nuclear war would be so horrible that a president would drop nuclear bombs on New York City rather than go to war in “Fail Safe,” and ended the Cold War satire of “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” with a series of atom bomb’s exploding set to the popular song “We’ll Meet Again.” But what they did not show was what that nuclear war would be like. Even the “Star Wars” universe assumed there would be a nuclear war some day, as did I, but depicting the horrors of such a war was never really done until “The Day After.”

However, exploding mushroom clouds and the victims of radiation poison were not what was most memorable about “The Day After.” The icon image from the film became the shots of the missiles taking off, with the people of Lawrence, Kansas looking up into the sky at the ICBMs headed towards the Soviet Union knowing that their missiles were heading for us. Suddenly it became clear that the true moment of horror would be when you saw those missiles because chances were you would never see the mushroom cloud that took your life. In fact, given the choice between being incinerated and surviving long enough to watch your loved ones suffer horribly, I think most people would hope for the quick death. This film turned those last few minutes of life from the old joke about how you need to bend over, put your head between your knees and kiss you ass goodbye into an enduring image of outright terror.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Day After! Click Here

The worst moments of this film are the painful period between the missiles taking off and the nukes exploding. One of the silos is right next to the Dahlberg farm, and the emotion nadir of the film is Denise Dahlberg (Lori Lethin) comes down the stairs holding the wedding dress she will never get to wear and her father tells her to get into the storm cellar. Then Jim Dahlberg (John Cullum) has to go upstairs and drag his wife Eve (Bibi Besch) screaming and crying away from the bed she is making in a desperate attempt to pretend that the world is not coming to an end.

Jason Robards is Dr. Russell Oakes, who along with Nurse Nancy Bauer (JoBeth Williams) has to deal with the casualties following the detonations at a besieged hospital, and Stephen Klein (Steve Guttenberg) is the guy who takes refuge with the Dahlbergs. Joe Huxley (John Lithgow) is the college professor who gets to supply most of the relatively small amount of exposition the story requires: a student thinks they are safe because Kansas is in the middle of nowhere, but the professor is the one who points out “There’s no ‘nowhere’ anymore” since there is an Air Force base and 150 Minutemen Missile silos spread halfway down Missouri, all constituting “an awful lot of bullseyes.” When the missiles take off he is the one who knows it takes thirty minutes to reach their target, a fact that applies to the incoming missiles as well.

I remember the night of November 11, 1983 as I watched “The Day After” how ABC did not run any commercials after the nukes went off and that right afterwards the network had a special news program in which Dr. Carl Sagan introduced us to the idea of a “nuclear winter” and the fact that the reality of a nuclear exchange would be much worse than we had seen. To say that this was a sobering idea to give an audience that was already depressed by what they had seen, would be an understatement. Sagan, of course, was opposed to the use of nuclear weapons and condemned the arms race. Speaking on the other side, which is to say in favor of the concept of nuclear deterrence, was William F. Buckley, Jr., and what we got to see in that debate (which is still available on video) was that both were right.

It is rather amazing, given the history of humanity, that it has been almost sixty years since nuclear weapons have been used in war. Ironically, we now live in a world where we still believe that those weapons are going to be used, although now we assume it will be the work of terrorists (or an attempt to stop terrorists) and not a war between East and West. I would not be surprised if right now Hollywood is kicking around ideas of what it would be like the day after that sort of nuclear detonation, going beyond what we saw in “The Sum of All Fears.” Hopefully it would be as successful at forestalling our worst nightmares as “The Day After” has been these many years.

When this made-for-TV movie came out, I remember being scared out of my pants for days literally… The fact that this was at the height of the Cold War era, and many people believed that Ronald Reagan was… well crazy enough and so were the Soviets made this broadcast so real. Oddly enough though, the British managed to outdo it with THREADS, which made me about twice as physically ill when it aired on TV.

The Broadcast was scary, and I remember after a panel of experts appearing on a special Nightline and a special call in to discuss issues. - - Could it happen ? Could anyone survive ? Would the living envy the dead ? - - and even more horrifyingly the fact that one of the more controversial elements of the broadcast was the arguement that the broadcast presented an OPTOMISTIC view of what it would be like to survive a nuclear holocaust.

Though just a made for TV movie (in an era when made-for-TV movies were usually corny), I have found this broadcast to be the most disturbing movie I’ve ever scene because at the time it was such a real possibility. (Even now it is… but then you could really sense that the U.S. was at a “let’s see who blinks first” stand off with the Soviet Union.)

In conclusion, THE DAY AFTER actually wasn’t the first broadcast of its type… about 40 years earlier there was actually a radio drama centered around the aftermath of a Nuclear War called THE FIFTH HORSEMAN… check it out ! ! !

Opening the CD the first thing that caught my eye was the, “Portfolio “selection within the menu. Of course like a little kid I just had to have dessert before dinner. There are 3 portfolios, Eastern State Penitentiary, The Best of HDR and the Ellis Island Project. Examining each photo in the portfolios I was able to see what I like, what I didn’t and what direction I want to go with HDR.

Buy,Download, Or Stream HDR! Click Here

There are ten lessons on the CD . You can click on the” Program” link to start watching from the beginning or click on the “Chapter “link to select one of the individual photographs used for each lesson. What I found interesting and useful is that at the list of chapters you have your choice of selecting either “Capture ” , which is Tony taking the photographs for the HDR or “Process ” to jump to the actually processing of the photographs. I have to admit after chapter one I skipped the Captured sections and went right to the “Process “sections for each chapter.

The last part of the DVD is the ” Reference Page ” containing info for websites, a DVD and other books on the subject. Not included with the links but I would like to include is the User galleries at Photomatix [..]. You will find some amazing work here.

We are still a few years away at having an affordable HDR camera in our hands but we at the cutting edge, heading into the High Dynamic Range of the future. This DVD will get you up and started now. It is very well put together and meant to get you started straight from the box.

Best of Light !!!

Tony got me started in HDR at his St. Michaels, Maryland, workshop last summer and, since then, I have felt pretty comfortable working HDR with most images. However, when I was in West Virginia last year I got access to an old mill that was being restored. There were no lights inside so it was very dark in most area, and bright sun was flowing through the few windows that were there. Most of my image sequences were 9 shots (8 stops…wow). So when I ran then through HDR software they just were not doing anything for me. Then a friend of min bought this DVD for me for my Birthday. It absolutely takes HDR processing up to a whole new level. After watching the DVD I realized that I did have a chance with some of these shots that I had given up on. Tony shows HDR techniques that I never thought of. I HIGHLY recommend this DVD.

This program entirely neglects Einstein’s achievements in favor of his disorganized sex life. This is rather like berating Casanova for not being a mathematical genius. The treatment of Einstein’s failures as a family man manages to be both sanctimonious and titillating at the same time. The script is barely literate, containing many grammatical ‘howlers’, and there is much use of inconsequential footage. You will learn precisely nothing about science from watching this video, and not much about the man.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Biography - Albert Einstein! Click Here

If you’re looking for a discussion of Einstein’s scientific genius stop here. This film was made for The Biography Channel and as such concentrates on the scientist’s - sometimes troubled - personal life. Consequently it can appear to be somewhat salacious, an abandoned first child, numerous affairs etc. However, the film is redeemed by the revelation that Einstein was targetted by Hoover’s FBI as a communist and potential ‘enemy of the state’. And of course all this was happening at the very time that Einstein was being celebrated as an immigrant who had fled Nazi tyranny to find freedom in the United States. The script is simplistic in places and takes numerous short cuts (the First World War is over in two minutes!) but if you are looking for an introduction to Einstein the man and the times in which he lived, this is a pretty good place to start.

In 1933, legendary motorcyle rider and cross country driver Erwin G. “Cannonball” Baker crossed the United States from coast to coast in approximately 54 hours driving a Graham-Page Model 57 Blue Streak 8…an amazing feat of driving. Nearly, 40 years later in the early 1970’s, “Car & Driver” magazine editor Brock Yates started the “Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash” in his honor. These events were the inspiration for a slew of films including the highly enjoyable, “The Gumball Rally”, (released in 1976) and the bigger budgeted, but inferior production, “The Cannonball Run” (released in 1981). Both were both primarily action oriented “car chase”comedies, however “Gumball” underplays it’s humour with a lesser known cast, thus delivering an overall better film than the Hal Needham directed “Cannonball Run” By far and away “The Gumball Rally”, is one of the best car chase films ever made with a jaw dropping collection of performance automobiles from all around the world. Car afficianado’s will drool over the line up of exotic cars….an AC Shelby Cobra, Ferrari Daytona, Porsche 911, Chevy Camaro, Jaguar E-Type, GM Corvette, Kawasaki motorbike, Mercedes Roadster to name but a few. Each team seeking to out race the other’s hurtling from New York to Long Beach, California.

Apart from the superb line up of cars, a fun and breezy cast really maintain the fine balance between the unique cars and the actors.

The opening sequence with the near deserted early morning streets of New York awoken by the thunder of finely tuned engines is brilliant…., as is the final showdown as the racers approach the Queen Mary in Los Angeles.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Gumball Rally! Click Here

Lead actor’s Raul Julia (driving the Ferrari with Tim McIntire) & Michael Sarrazin (driving the Shelby Cobra with Nicholas Pryor) shine in this comic escapade and character actor Norman Burton is wonderful as the bumbling cop, Lieutenant Roscoe trying to stop the cross country madness.

( Tragically, actor Tim McIntire died at age 42 from heart failure, possibly brought about by his alleged drug/alcohol addiction. Steven Keats (Kandinsky) died from an apparent suicide at age 49, and Normann Burton died in a car accident aged 80 ! )

It’s great to finally have “The Gumball Rally” officially released on DVD, however it’s fairly dissapointing that the disc has “zero” in the way of extras. Would have been nice to have some commentary from cast or crew, or some behind the scenes on the making of the film.

So buckle up your seat belts, start your engines, and hang on and enjoy pure petroleum based entertainment…….And remember the first rule of Italian driving…” What’s a-behind me is not important “.

Of the “let’s break the law and have some fun while we do it” genre, this is one of the best. The writing, the acting and the production was witty, funny, and still holds up nearly 30 years later.

So where, oh where, oh WHERE, is the DVD? Another reviewer said it for all of us when he quoted Raul Julia’s character-defining line from the early part of the film: “What is behind me…is not important.” And so it goes with VHS…over, behind us, end of story…Bring ON the DVD!

I would like to comment, that this movie is not a sexploitation movie!. As there is not one love scene in the whole movie lesbian or heterosexual! and thats to its credit in my opionion. The plot is simple, sexy Kathleen Kinmont is phoenix a pious sand trapper in an apocalyptic earth that has been ravaged by chemical warfare. Most of the male population has been obliterated by plagues cause by warfare and what remains is a small band of women called She Wolves. Phoenix has made it her mission to protect Keela(Peggy Sands)who is carrying the seed to possibly repopulate the male population. She is opposed by Bagger the reverend mother of the She Wolves who doesn’t want a repopulation of the male species. What follows is your usual script for movies like this, such as gladiator duels and fighting mutants etc.etc. The acting and action is what you’d expect for a low budget B movie. But I bought the dvd to see Kathleen Kinmont and I was not disappointed, she’s quite striking and attractive scantily clad,so if youy want to purchase this dvd for Kathleen Kinmont do so.

In the future, the male population has been destroyed by nuclear war, leaving only the women, all of whom are hot young babes. Hair care products also seem to have survived intact, but clothing has been reduced to tattered bikinis and other Mad Max style gear. As the movie begins, after the obligatory action sequence of a mortar-firing dune buggy chasing a smaller dune buggy, we find our heroine Kathleen Kinmont rescuing a girl from the clutches of the evil babes. Soon she learns that this young girl is pregnant, the only pregnant girl on the planet. So the evil babes are very anxious to get her back. Turns out the evil babes are ruled by the “Reverend Mother”, and old hag who sits in a room and apparently has a scientific laboratory stashed away somewhere where she conducts genetic experiments.

Buy,Download, Or Stream She Wolves of the Wasteland! Click Here

Anyhow, Kinmont and her pal make it through a variety of gunfights, gladiator battles and even survive being run over by a truck. They meet up with a man, by which time the pregnant girl has already given birth to a son. I suppose the odds of the girls who have the only male child on earth meeting up with the only other man on earth are fairly slim, but hey, it never violated my suspension of disbelief. Eventually of course they are captured and brought before the Reverend Mother, for the exciting, or well, for the showdown.

This is ’80s cheese at its best. Acting is bad, sets are cheap and reused over and over, the babes are hot and plentiful, and there’s all the chuckle-inducing low budget action you can handle. Typical ’80s music suitable for an aerobics class plays throughout. This movie was always know as Phoenix the Warrior until it was renamed for DVD release.

Michel Guerard is (in)famous for Nouveau Cuisine, now something like forty years old. Here he is shown in a French documentary creating new dishes, a new menu, for his restaurant. It’s one of the few places that the chef’s creativity is on full display. This is a niche film for sure, but it’s quite fascinating. There’s another film in this series available looking at Paul Ganaire (Inventing Cuisine: Paul Ganaire). Good stuff if you’re interested.

I was lucky enough to get to see ‘10 Questions’ at a movie screening earlier this year. In hindsight, I had wondered if it might be a bit boring, but was I wrong! It was absolutely fascinating from beginning until end. Tha Dalai Lama is one incredible man and Rick Ray did an really nice job of capturing some beautiful images and putting together this film. I highly recommend ‘10 Questions’ for anyone from age 5 on up. I hope that the DVD will have some good bonus features, too.

This is a very gentle documentary film of the most famous monk in the world, his humble origins and his joint role as spiritual and political leader of Tibetans.

It’s combination of background and insertion of clips to illustrate points during the actual interview with his holiness enhances what would be to most people a relatively staid movie. What results is an interesting story of a man who insists that he is but a man despite everything which his many follwers wish upon him. He is his own person, someone who wishes his own privacy despite the pressure upon him to be a purely public figure.

The documentary also deals with real political difficulties, addressing the issue of China and accusing the Chinese government in all but name of the kidnap of the Panchen Lama, yet managing to maintain some degree of impartiality so that it avoids the charge of being mere propaganda.

We learn much too, of the filmmaker and his observations, especially where he notes that it is those with least who display outward signs of happiness while those who have the most are the least happy.

Overall this is well worth watching especially to gain some insight into the mind of one of the most influential men of the 20th Century. After having watched this film today, I was reminded of the famous remark of Stalin who is reported to have asked: “How many legions has the Pope?”.

Perhaps China’s current rulers would be advised to ask the same question about the Dalai Lama.

Anyone buying a copy of this film should really get the wide screen DVD version. The flying sequences are so much better in widescreen as are the scenes in the North Pole toy factory. The “full frame” pan and scan version just can’t hold a candle to the widescreen (I have both so have carefully compared them.)

There is an excellent director’s comment track with questions being asked by the Special Projects Consultant for Anchor Bay (the company distributing the DVD) and answered and expanded upon by the director, Jeannot Szwarc. It is worth the price of the package alone. However there is also a great “making of” feature that was produced as a TV documentary at the time of the theatrical release of the film.

This is a really great Christmas film for the whole family. The first hour telling the story of how a simple wood cutter and toy maker become Santa Claus is completely charming. David Huddleston is a wonderful Claus. Dudly Moore is excellent as the elf, Patch, who is into everything and constantly inventing new gadgets. He shows his tender side as he grooms and takes care of the reindeer. It is really tragic that Mr. Moore now has the disease that make it impossible for him to perform any longer. That makes this film that much more of a treasure as it shows him at the top of his form as an actor. (Too bad the producers couldn’t have used his musical talents in some way.)

John Lithgow is a delightfully hammy villain in the second portion of the film showing the early stages of the character he later does in “Third Rock From The Sun”. The two children are also great, very real and not the cloying poor child actors that could easily have been used.

Trim the tree, light a fire in the fireplace, pour an egg nog and enjoy the very special Holiday treat!.

The man who plays Santa in this movie is the cutest, sweetest, most magical Santa Claus ever captured on film. I swear to this day…this man IS the real Santa. They could not have done a better job in casting this film. I get goosebumps every time they show Santa take off in the sleigh for the first time. Outstanding movie!!

Movie Title: Nick Knight
Average customer review:

Nick Knight is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Nick Knight

In the 1989 TV flick NICK KNIGHT, rocker (1981’s Grammy-winning “Jessie’s Girl”) and soap-opera star (GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1981-1983) Rick Springfield portrays Nick Knight, a homicide detective on the night shift who has a reputation for being a loner and a maverick. But he’s a good cop, and he’s hip. He drives a cool vintage Caddy, looks good in black leather, and has a soft spot in his heart for the homeless (he often checks up on them when he’s out on his “beat”). Oh, yeah–and he’s also a guilt-ridden vampire in quest of a cure for his supernatural malady. Solving crimes, specifically homicides, is sort of his way of paying penance for the murderous, blood-sucking sins of his past.

Though often neglected or overlooked, NICK KNIGHT is an intelligent, skillfully written, and well-acted TV film that was actually the original pilot for the popular cult TV series FOREVER KNIGHT (1992-1996). One reason that this film is nearly forgotten might be the fact that the same story was re-shot with the TV cast and subsequently aired as the series’ two-part opener. While the cast of the series does a fine job-the excellent cast is, of course, one of many reasons that the show quickly became a cult favorite–NICK KNIGHT is in many ways superior to the two-part remake, and it is therefore unfortunate that the series has eclipsed the original film and pushed it into near obscurity.

The acting in NICK KNIGHT is superb, especially considering that it is a made-for-TV flick. In the titular role, Springfield delivers a strong, convincing performance and has great chemistry with the rest of the cast. Also intriguing is Laura Johnson, who plays museum curator Alyce Hunter and Knight’s love interest. Not only is she a good actress and quite attractive, but Ms. Johnson and Springfield really sizzle together when they share screen time. Genre fans might recognize Michael Nader from his role as Nicolas Pike in TV’s short-lived 1990 series THE FLASH, but couch potatoes are more likely to recognize him from his long-standing role as Farnsworth Dexter on TV’s nighttime soap DYNASTY. Here he plays Nick’s longtime nemesis, Lacroix. (Nader does a good job in the role, though he is admittedly not as compelling–nor as accomplished an actor–as Nigel Bennett, who assumes the role in the series.) As the film’s comic relief, John Kapelos is hilariously entertaining in the role of Nick’s annoyingly self-absorbed partner Don Schanke, and he often steals the scenes he is in. Interestingly, Kapelos is the only actor in the film who returns to reprise his role for the TV series.

The film itself has really stood up well over time. Aside from the 1980’s pop tunes in the soundtrack and a few cheesy special FX, there isn’t much that reveals NICK KNIGHT to be a product of late-1980s TV. The script is tight and interesting, the characters are likable and realistic, the directing is top-notch, and, as mentioned before, the acting is excellent. All in all, the film is a forgotten gem that, like its vampire characters, deserves to rise from the dead and live forever.

And thanks to the folks at Anchor Bay, NICK KNIGHT has been resurrected on DVD. True, he offering is a bare-bones disc–i.e., there are no extras or bonus features–but the digital transfer is drastically better than the previous VHS releases of the film, and the sound quality is pretty good. And being a telefilm, it is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1.

For fans of the TV show FOREVER KNIGHT who did not see this pilot film prior to the creation of the series, it might take a little time to warm up to the alternate actors and the character variations. But if viewed an open mind, any fan of the TV series should enjoy NICK KNIGHT, and any fan of the vampire genre will want to add the DVD of this excellent film to their collections.

Definitely worth amazon.com’s reasonable price of admission.

I remember watching this when it premiered on television. Network television was going through one of its periodic obsessions with police procedural shows and the introduction of a vampire to the night shift of a metropolitan police force had a certain amount of appeal.

The show that finally ran (Forever Knight) was quite a bit different and therein lies some of the appeal of watching this movie– the chance to compare and contrast. I had just recently bought the first season of Forever Knight so I had a prime opportunity here.

This version is slicker, with an 80’s rock background that has a certain retro appeal. It was obviously shot in a warmer climate. Rick Springfield has a lean and hungry look that contibutes to his tortured vampire character as he runs the gamut of emotion from tormented to tormented. While probably a better actor, Geraint Wynn Davies who played the character in the series, has to fight against his sleek, blond appearance. Somehow it is easier to look as if you have a brooding, soul-destroying secret if you are a brunette.

I also really enjoyed the contrast between Nick’s starvling, blood junkie pose and Alyce Hunter, the Mayan scholar, constantly stuffing herself with junk food. I also enjoyed her look since Wardrobe apparently dressed her from Banana Republic back in the good old days before BR became a mall shop.

Anyway, the movie is not bad at all if you are in the mood for some vampire mind candy with a bit of retro.

Remember all those old movies where the swashbuckling hero swoops down to the rescue and saves the day for one and all, defeating the enemies and getting the girl all within a few hours’ entertainment? “The Mask of Zorro” is a testament to those movies, embodying all of these characteristics in its magnificent story and exhilarating action sequences. With a powerhouse cast that seems as if they were born to play the parts they play, as well as strong music and a solid story, Zorro once again rises from Hollywood deterioration to save the day in a movie that is good, old-fashioned fun from beginning to end!

The old Zorro legend is given a new twist with this film, which begins with Don Diego de la Vega, the original and legendary Zorro, saving a group of prisoners from execution in the town square and leaving his mark on his nemesis, Don Raphael, warning him to leave and never return. Raphael does leave, but not before killing de la Vega’s wife and taking his child, also having him imprisoned. Many years later, Raphael returns, “daughter” in tow, to name himself the new governer and to make sure his past enemy is all but alive in his prison. Through extreme craftiness and cunning, de la Vega escapes, only to discover his life is no longer what it once was.

His venture into the public brings him to the attention of one Alejandro Murrieta, who quarrels with him in the marketplace and then resolves himself to friendship. The two do share a past: on the day of Zorro’s last battle, Alejandro, along with his brother, saved him from death. Now, Alejandro is distraught and torn with revenge for Captain Harrison Love, the murderer of his brother, and agrees to take on the mask once worn by de la Vega, who in turn will teach him the art of fighting with honor and grace.

The movie is one of those tributes to the old movies of the past, which played out the story of a hero who won all the goods and the girl in the ending. This one admittedly involves a few more characters than those old movies, but that’s not to say that they don’t each play a special part in the advancement of the movie. The romance, epic scale, action sequences and extreme wit are all present, making this a very exciting and memorable movie experience.

The advancement of the plot lies within the external battle between Raphael and our two heroes, who devise plan after plan to bring him to his downfall. They discover that he has made plans of tricking Santa Anna out of his own land, thus setting the stage for the impending climax which pits good against evil. The characters are all given the chance to become complex and intelligent, which is important in a movie like this. As they begin to outmatch one another, this adds on to the movie’s tension over who will win out in the end.

The settings and music have a vast effect on the look and feel of this movie, which takes place in the 19th century. The sets are full of artistic influences from Spanish backgrounds and artists, giving it the true look and feel of the time period. Costume design also adds to the grandeur and pomp of the aristocracy as well as the impoverished conditions of the poor, adding to the contrast between the two differing demographics. The music, composed by James Horner, is amazing, employing Spanish instruments and rhythms while keeping a mordern feel to its score as well. The music adds a lot of heart to the movie, bringing out the intensity, the romance, the passion, and the victories with stylish and rousing compositions that fit right into the entire picture.

The choreography and stunts for this film are what really make it work for the audience, dazzling us with some of the most effective swordplay ever acted out on film. Most of the battle scenes involve men with swords, fighting against one another with an honorable form of battle. Actors Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stuart Wilson and Matt Letscher all hit the swordplay as if they are prose, adding believability as well as excitement to these scenes.

The actors mentioned above bring so much to the movie. Banderas is magnificent in his role as Alejandro, the new Zorro, a role he seems destined to have played. His looks, his charm, and his wit and personality all make this Zorro one of the finest ever. Hopkins brings his usual presence to the movie, establishing his character as one of immense wit and intelligence, while also possessing a vast knowledge of the art of fighting. Catherine Zeta-Jones sparkles in her role as Elena, de la Vega’s daughter, and the chemistry between she and Banderas is dazzling and intense. Stuart Wilson and Matt Matt Letscher play our enemies, and they do so with performances to match those of the heroes.

“The Mask of Zorro” is one big piece of fun that works on many different levels. Some will find pleasure in watching the actors work with the material, some will find intrigue in watching the romance unfold, while the action and adventure will most likely be the most influential factor that wins over the audience. It never stops moving, and keeps dishing out the thrills, the laughs, and the cheers.

This review refers to the Columbia TriStar DVD Dec 2000 release of “The Mask of Zorro”……

You’re a big fan of this Zorro film but don’t want to shell out big bucks? This DVD is for you. Columbia/TriStar’s transfer to DVD is one of the best I’ve seen. There isn’t one detail about it that’s inferior. The picture is presented in beautiful anamorphic widescreen(2.35:1), and shows off the incredible cinematography of the Mexico/California regions. The colors are outstanding. They jump out at you and take your breath away. The sound including the wonderful score, the dialouge and all the swashbuckling action is outstanding in the Dolby Dgigtal 5.1(THX) surround. You can also set it up for 2.0 stereo if you choose. You won’t find a ton a special features, but there is “making of” featurette, with some commentary by cast and crew, that is entertaining and informative. For those who would prefer more on the side of extras and don’t mind paying more, there is a “special edition” release that has lots of goodies including a video, and lots of commentary(see buying info). There is also a “super-bit” version, also more expensive if you choose.(Don’t look for extras there).

The movie is packed with action, adventure, romance, and comedy and drama. It will appeal to you if you love westerns, history, or swashbucklers. The story opens with Zorro(Anthony Hopkins)bounding in to help save the Mexican people from the ruthless Don Rafeal Montero(Stuart Wilson). They have been under Spanish rule and are now about to be free. Montero and Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro have been sworn enemies for years. Montero follows De La Vega back to his home, finds that he is Zorro, a swordfight ensues, Diego’s wife is murdered, his baby girl stolen and he is imprisoned.Montero flees back to Spain and raises the child as his own.

Twenty years later……..Diego learning of Montero’s return, see’s a chance to reclaim his daughter, Elena(the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones) and breaks out of prison. He now trains a younger and stronger man, Alejandro Murietta(Antonio Banderas), to take his place and to help save the people once again from the ruthless Montero.Lots of adventure abounds as they set out to accomplish these feats, and of course lots of romantic adventure as well between Alejandro and Elena. You never knew sword fighting was so much fun and so sexy until you see these two in a duel!

Hopkins is exquiste as the older Zorro, Banderas charming, funny, and handsome as ever, and Zeta-Jones in one of her earliest roles really shines through. Other notables to watch for are L.Q. Jones as “Three-Fingered Jack”, and Pedro Armendariz Jr as Don Pedro. Cinematography by Phil Meheux(The Saint/Goldeneye)is outstanding, Musical score by James Horner brillant as always in giving the perfect feeling to the story, and wonderful direction by Martin Campbell(Vertical Limit/Goldeneye).

Watch for “The Sign of the Z”……..Laurie
